Granitan® – The foundation of our precision

For its cylindrical grinding machines, STUDER relies on machine bases made of Granitan®, a mineral-based material specifically developed to ensure the highest precision. The mixture of selected aggregates and epoxy resin is processed using a cold-casting method and cures within a day to form a highly stable machine base.

Why Granitan®? The key benefits

Excellent Damping

Granitan® absorbs vibrations up to 15 times better than gray cast iron. This ensures exceptionally smooth grinding processes and more precise surfaces.

Thermal Stability

The material can absorb twice as much heat as gray cast iron and conducts it away significantly more slowly. As a result, grinding results remain consistent even when workshop temperatures fluctuate.

High manufacturing precision

Thanks to near-net-shape casting, structures, channels, and even our StuderGuide® guideways can be cast directly into the material with micrometer-level precision.

Sustainable manufacturing process

The production of Granitan® requires less energy than gray cast iron and enables resource-efficient machine designs.

Continuous improvement

Granitan® is continuously being optimized—from various formulations for specific applications to the integration of sensor technology directly into the machine base. This ensures that the material remains a reliable foundation for precise, digital, and future-proof grinding technology.

Today, Granitan® is a central component of STUDER’s machine architecture—and a key reason why our customers worldwide consistently achieve high workpiece quality.
